I wonder how many of us made plans for the year on 1 January only to forget them soon afterwards!
The idea of business planning is a real turn off to many busy, practical business owners – no time, no
certainty, no skills, no belief that it will do any good!

Yet most of us would not buy a new computer without some sort of planning, we would plan an
expensive holiday, if we going to buy a new vehicle we will probably look at a few and try them out
first, if we are to buy a house or getting married we will certainly be doing plenty of planning.
Planning is part of all our lives yet many business owners continue to make decisions which cost
money and which often involve other people, on the smell of an oily rag!
Business planning has a bad name in New Zealand – it is often seen as cumbersome, bureaucratic, too
hard, unnecessary, irrelevant, not practical.

Come and join Chris Elphick as he removes the myths around planning and provides us with an
approach to planning which not only is proven to work, but is also fun!!

On Tuesday 6th March Chris examines what planning is all about and why we should all do it.
On Tuesday 20th March he focuses on what a plan could look like and how to create one.
Finally in this series, on Wednesday 28th March he looks at how we keep our planning alive, real, relevant and focused on getting the business growth we want and deserve.

Perhaps you have already begun using various Social Media platforms in a business context?

While Social Media started out as sites for individuals to stay in contact with friends and
families or to meet new people, it is now a phenomenon which is very much a part of the
global marketplace. Businesses, small and large alike, are tapping into what has become an
invaluable resource for engaging with consumers. It is a platform for free advertising, it
reaches consumers on a grand scale and it can provide businesses with a unique snapshot of
the market-place and what customers are thinking.
But it is also a legal minefield.

If you are considering or are already using Social Media to promote
your business then you should find out the legal issues that can
arise and learn how to mitigate them.

Your Presenter:
Kirsten Ferguson is an Associate at Duncan Cotterill Lawyers. She is
generous subsidies available to businesses who want to make changes.
